Benefits of a Morning Workout

morning workout

Is there an advantage to working out in the morning as opposed to after work? I mean, does it really matter if I burn 500 calories at 7 a.m. instead of at 7 p.m.? Yes! An early morning workout does so many things for your body that an evening workout just can’t do. First, a morning workout boosts your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours, giving you energy for the day. Second, with regular morning workouts, you not only regulate your appetite for the entire day, but you regulate your body’s endocrine system and circadian rhythms. And, lastly, a morning workout guarantees that other daily activities won’t distract or keep you from your workout—talk about a great way to stay on track.

Now, some people might say, “Okay, Lindsey, these are great, but I’m not a morning person.” Not to worry! Most people dread getting up earlier then they have to, but if you are really committed to getting fit and to changing your lifestyle, getting up earlier may be a great place to start, so here are some tips to help get you out of bed:

1. Instead of having your alarm clock near your bed, move it across the room. This will force you to get out of bed to turn it off, and once you are up it is much easier to stay up.
2. Find yourself a workout partner. If you have someone waiting for you, you’re less likely to hit the snooze button.
3. Write down your workout goals in a journal, and make sure to include the time you are going to wake up for your morning workout.
4. Load fun, fast music to your iPod. If you have exciting music waiting for you, you may just be motivated to get out of bed for a listen.
5. Lay out the clothes you plan to wear, put your socks and sneakers in front of your bed, and set a bottle of water next to your alarm clock.
6. Use social media to keep you accountable and share your exercise plans.
7. Reward yourself with a healthy breakfast—eggs, veggies, oatmeal, fruit, and nuts.
8. If you make all of your morning workouts for an entire week, reward yourself with a new outfit, a pedicure, or a nice long bubble bath.

So, make an effort to start setting your alarm clock even 30 minute earlier, and squeeze in a quick workout before you start your day. Plus, if you make it a habit, you just might become a morning person!
