travel beauty essentials

Whether you’ve booked a weekend getaway or you’re trekking half way around the world, there are a few travel beauty essentials that all women should have on hand to keep feeling refreshed and looking your best upon arrival. As someone who absolutely loves to travel (and does so often!) I can attest to the power of these simple items at keeping tired eyes, dry skin and bloating at bay. And the best part? They are not only convenient but affordable too!

Why Travel Is Hard on Your Body

The grand adventure of travel is a luxury and I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to visit new places and see new sights. I’m sure many of you can relate and also find travel very personally rewarding!

But for those of us who love to travel on a regular basis, it can take a serious toll on our bodies. Whether your traveling by plane, train or automobile here are just a few factors to consider:

Climate: The climate can greatly affect your body, especially your skin. Air conditioning in the car or the plane’s pressurized cabin zaps your skin of any moisture it had, resulting in a less-than-sexy glow. It can also cause dry eyes, brittle hair, and zits. Exfoliation and moisturizer is key, both before and after arrival.

Time: If you are traveling far, you might be well aware of how the timezone change can affect your mood and sleep patterns. Sleep (or lack thereof) can create under eye circles, insomnia and uncontrollable exhaustion.

Diet: From the added salt in the airplane food to new and exotic cuisine at your destination, food changes can result in bloating, upset stomach or mood swings. We all know nutrition is a key factor in the health and happiness of your body as a whole, so don’t discredit it as a primary component to your experience!

My 7 Must-Have Travel Beauty Essentials

So what’s a girl to do when she’s confronted with these less than stellar beauty conundrums?

She will E.M.P.O.W.E.R. herself to look and feel her best of course!

E: Exfoliate

Before and after your flight or drive, remember to use either an exfoliating cleanser or something like a Clarisonic exfoliating brush to deeply cleanse the skin and remove any of the dead cells that may clog it later. If you want that sexy, vibrant glow then exfoliation is your top priority!

M: Moisturize

Find a quality, light moisturizer to carry with you at all times. Depending on your skin type you may need a heavier cream, but I tend to find a lighter cream is just fine for most skin types depending on the travel destination.

P: Probiotics

An absolute essential for anyone traveling to a new destination or with a sensitive stomach, probiotics provide your gut with the much-needed good bacteria to breakdown unhealthy visitors and create an optimal environment to digest nutrients. One or two a day should do the trick to keep your digestive system on track.

O: Oxygen

So many of us forget to breathe! It’s especially difficult when we’re crammed into tiny seats for more than a few hours. Every hour take 5 minutes to sit up straight and take 10 long deep breaths in and out through your nose, filling your lower lungs. If you have trouble breathing past your collarbone (which most of us struggle with), try placing your hand on your stomach and direct your breath down to meet it. Deep breathing has been shown to lower stress, improve cognitive functioning and aid in digestion.

W: Water

Bloating, fatigue and a host of other travel discomforts can be easily remedied by staying hydrated. Since traveling by plane can greatly dehydrate you (stick to only one glass of alcohol if you can in-flight), I recommend you drink anywhere from 2-3 liters of water within a 12 hour time period. Yes, you most likely will need to use the restroom multiple times but it is well worth it compared to swollen ankles and exhaustion.

E: Eye Cream

My beauty best friend, a good eye cream can reduce puffiness and under eye circles with a simple swipe. Most eye creams come as an all-in-one including anti-wrinkle treatment so it’s up to you to find the brand and cream that works best for your particular skin type. An even better de-puffing tip: place your eye cream in the refrigerator for a cool treat and to help combat those issues even faster!

R: Rest

Constantly being on the go means bringing our laptops along for long flights or road trips. I recommend shutting down and resting instead! It can be difficult at first to disconnect but I promise that the extra rest you’ll receive will help with the possible jet-lag later.
