Eating Organic Beginner's Guide

I’m sure by now you’ve heard plenty about how you just have to go organic.

Maybe you’ve even tried it.  But do you know why you should make the switch?  More importantly – did you know that it can actually be affordable?

If you’re considering making the switch to eating organic, here are six reasons to jump start journey:

  1. Eating Organic is Better for Your Health:  Conventionally raised or grown foods are produced with help from herbicides, pesticides, fungicide, growth hormone, fertilizers, etc.  These things can all take a toll on our bodies by exposing us to toxins and affecting our overall health.  Some studies have even linked these chemicals to leaky gut and in some cases, cancer.  Organic foods are produced without using dangerous chemicals or hormones, and using natural fertilizers, such as animal manure.  This means less exposure to harmful chemicals and hormones that can lead to health problems.
  1. Organic Foods are Non-GMO:  By definition, organic foods are non-GMO because GMO crops do not exist in nature – they have been genetically modified for easier growing purposes.  Did you know that GMO corn is combined with bacteria in order to create a toxin that acts as a natural insecticide?  Did you know it can cause leaky gut in humans?  Organic meats are also produced on farms that do not feed their animals GMO feed.
  1. Organic Foods are More Nutritious:  Because organic crops are produced in more mineral-rich soil, they are naturally more nutritious.  This also means that our meat is more nutritious, since the animals are fed more nutritious foods.  Since conventionally grown produce is engineered to withstand the elements, it can grow in soil that is less ideal, resulting in less nutritious food.
  1. Eating Organic Helps the Planet:  I could seriously go on forever with this one.  But less use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers leads to less pollution of land and water.  It also results in more biodiversity (i.e. more varieties of crops), since organically-grown crops are seasonally appropriate and aren’t “force-grown.”  Less toxic runoff leads to less destruction of land and wildlife.  I could go on and on, but you see the snowball effect here.
  1. It Doesn’t Have to be Expensive:  More and more grocery stores like Wal-Mart are offering organic options at affordable prices.  You can also order ingredients in bulk from places like Thrive Market, Frontier Co-Op, or Amazon Fresh.  You can start small by gradually replacing conventional items in your kitchen with organic ones as you run out.  You can also save money by purchasing your meat and produce from your local farmers’ market or butcher.  As a bonus of shopping locally, you will know where your food came from and support your local farmers and economy directly.
  1. Organic Foods Taste Better:  Because organic foods are grown in better, more nutrient-rich soil, they come from stronger, healthier plants.  This directly enhances the taste of your foods since they are untouched by genetic modification or harmful chemicals and growing practices.

You see?  Eating organic doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.  It’s better for you, our farmers, and our planet.  Be sure to check out local farmers’ markets and butcher shops in your area so you can start cleaning out your pantry and incorporating fresh, local, organic items into your diet.
