skin superfoods

Your skin is your largest organ.

It’s also the first thing people see when they look at you.  And you can tell a lot about a person’s health by the condition of their skin.  Have you ever heard the expression “You are what you eat”?  Well, that’s especially true when it comes to the health of your skin.  Feeling tired or puffy?  Are you noticing a new wrinkle every day?  Your diet could be to blame.  Your diet should be healthy and consist of plenty of skin superfoods – good fats, antioxidants, lots of vitamins like Vitamin C, as well as plenty of collagen, and amino acids.

You are what you eat, people.

A couple of tweaks to your diet could help you attain that fresh-faced, glowing complexion you’ve been looking for!  Try some of these skin superfoods to start nourishing your skin from the inside out:

  1. Berries:  Berries are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, and are jam-packed with nutrients that support your skin from UV damage and free radicals.  They can also support collagen production, which helps with skin elasticity and that youthful glow!
  2. Avocado:  Did we really need another reason to love avocado?  No, but it sure is nice to have one!  Avocado’s high amount of fatty acids like Omega 9, help with skin firmness and appearance, and can help with the repair of skin damage.  They can also reduce redness and irritation.  Omega 9’s help keep your skin moisturized which helps with that gorgeous glow.  The antioxidants in avocado also fight free radicals, skin damage, premature aging, and help with skin elasticity!
  3. Pumpkin:  Pumpkins (and their seeds!) are the ultimate skin superfood.  They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins A and C, as well as minerals.  Their richness in zinc helps with skin cell regeneration and regulates oil production.  Pumpkin can also refine your pores and improve your skin tone.
  4. Bone Broth:  Bone broth is a great source of collagen, essential amino acids, as well as calcium and magnesium.  The collagen in bone broth keeps your skin smooth and firm, helping to reverse the effects of aging.  Gelatin in bone broth can also help reduce inflammation, which also helps with the whole anti-aging thing.  What’s not to love?
  5. Leafy Greens:  C’mon, give kale a chance!  Leafy greens like broccoli, cabbage, and kale are rich in sulfur compound that can help detoxify your skin of free radicals, leaving you with clear, radiant, glowing skin!  Just another reason to make sure you eat your greens!
  6. Lemon: How many times have you heard someone tell you to put some lemon in your water?  Well, here’s another reason:  lemon is great for your skin.  It’s packed with vitamin C, which helps get rid of free radicals and helps with our skin’s elastin and collagin, leaving us with firmer, youthful skin.  Lemon is one of the most alkalizing foods out there, meaning that it helps balance our bodies’ pH levels.  Imbalanced pH levels can lead to sensitive, dry, and irritated skin.  Lemon can help in soothing these skin ailments.
  7. Shakeology:  Come on, I couldn’t talk about superfoods and not talk about your daily serving of dense superfood nutrition, now could I?  Among all of the many amazing benefits of Shakeology is its amazing effect on your skin.  It’s packed with a ton of skin-nourishing ingredients like:  Biotin, bromelain, chlorella, citric acid, cocao, gingko, goji berry, grape seed extract, green tea, magnesium, papain, schisandra, and  vitamins B5, A, B2, B6, C, E, K.  Rather than go through the entire list of what each of these can do, I’ll just give you the bottom line:  These ingredients can help with acne, uneven skin tone, aid in skin protection, repair, support, and many of these ingredients have anti-aging benefits as they help with elastin and collagen production.  Detoxifying properties help with the elimination of free radicals and aid in skin cell repair, leaving you with healthy, firm, luminous skin!

Let me say it again: You are what you eat.  If you’re unhappy with the state of your complexion, start looking at what’s on your plate.  What you eat makes all the difference in nourishing your skin from the inside out.
