getting through airport security

With all the flying I’ve done over the last few years – whether it was Beachbody related trips or my solo-vacations abroad – I’ve become a bit of a pro at getting through security with little fuss. Granted, there may be some airports whose lines are extremely long – but aside from logistics outside of your control, getting through security quickly and without disposing of your precious liquids is an art form you must learn!

What’s Up With All Those Regulations

Air travel is still one of the safest forms of transportation out there, though with a variety of new-age threats to deal with, the TSA (that’s the Transportation Security Administration) has created a new set of standards to help those of us who fly often, fly safe.

That doesn’t always make it convenient, but it does mean you can breathe with relief knowing there is more scrutiny before each flight.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the most common, and often frustrating, carry-on rules:

• Liquids: 3.4 ounces or smaller that fit in 1 quart-sized, clear and resealable bag
• Breastmilk, formula or juice for infants or toddlers is permitted over 3.4 ounces, but you must inform the officer as you prepare your items to be scanned
• Medications: must be clearly labeled and if carrying liquid medication you may carry in excess of 3.4 ounces without requiring a quart-sized bag
• Identification: an updated ID card or passport is required as you enter into the security area though not required as you move through the scanning process
• Electronics: make sure they are charged and turned off (laptops and iPads especially)

The Best Ways to Getting Through Airport Security FAST

The most common and repeated mistake I see as people make while getting through airport security is the liquid allowance. Far too often, men and women bring their favorite moisturizers, creams or cologne only to find that it’s just a little too big based on the regulations.

There is nothing more frustrating than having to discard of your favorite or essential products, especially if they are high-quality!

Below are given some tips to getting through airport security quickly:

Travel Tip #1: Get Pre-Approved

If you are a frequent flier, there is no reason you shouldn’t be in the TSA PreCheck program. With over 180 airports and 16 airlines as members, it makes flying extremely easy and moving through security super fast. Once approved, you can bypass the regular security lines and move through the scanning process in as little as five minutes, depending on the airport.

Travel tip #2: Measure Out Your Liquids

Those travel size plastic containers are your best friend! Grab a bunch down at your local Target, K-Mart or whichever store you love and use them. It’s easier to place your favorite moisturizers, creams and cleansers into these containers than it is to have to potentially replace your larger jars if they get trashed during the scan.

Travel tip #3: Pack Wisely

There is nothing worse than having to dig through your bags and belongings for your liquids and electronics. Keep these items near the top of your things (don’t worry, you can repack later if need be) to make pulling out and placing in the bins easy and fast. I like to keep my quart-size bag of liquids and laptop easily reachable in my carry-on, usually right as I open my zipper so I don’t need to go digging through my things.

Travel Tip #4: Have Your Paperwork Ready

Keep your identification and ticket on you at all times, preferably in a back pocket instead of your purse. All too often, those items make their way to the bottom of a bag, forcing you to dig through your things at the last minute. Folding your ticket neatly around your ID card and placing it within arms reach makes the entire process smooth and relaxed.

Travel Tip #5: Stay Calm

Waiting in lines is never fun, but being agitated just makes it worse. If I’m waiting to move through security, I find that patience really IS a virtue! Deep breathing and visualization help. Instead of focusing on how frustrating it is to have to wait, why not imagine yourself at your final destination, happy and relaxed? Your mindset plays a big part in how you experience life!

Final Note…

Remember, we’re all here to do a job. The individuals who check our luggage and keep us safe are following a set of standards created by a much larger organization. Getting frustrated or upset with an individual doesn’t help the situation. Even if you do end up having to throw away product or get your bags checked, try to send loving energy and give a thank you when it’s finished. A little kindness goes a long way!
