truth about trans fat, junk food

For years now, you’ve seen a ton of foods touting themselves as having “zero trans fats.”

But what are trans fats and why are they so bad for you?

Well, for starters, trans fats are the unhealthiest of all the fats on earth.  They’re made by adding hydrogen to unsaturated fat in order to stabilize them.  They’re most commonly used to extend the shelf lives of many packaged foods like baking mixes and crackers.  Pro tip:  If something can sit in your pantry for months on end without spoiling, you probably shouldn’t be eating it.

Trans fats can wreak havoc on your body.  Trans fats have been known to cause inflammation all throughout the body.  They’ve also been linked to insulin resistance, heart disease, excess belly fat, cancer, obesity, metabolic issues, memory loss, depression, reduced cognition, and Alzheimer’s.  It’s pretty nasty stuff.

That being said, always be sure to read your food labels.  Just because something claims to have “no trans fats” doesn’t mean it’s good for you.  Just the other day, I saw some greasy potato chips that had no trans fats.  Beware of misleading claims.  Remember, sugar is fat-free and gluten-free.  That doesn’t make it a health food.

Be sure to get your fats from good, natural sources.  Not all fats are created equal, and not all of them are terrible for you.  In fact, natural fats can be some of the best, most nourishing foods on earth.  Healthy fats and provide energy, nourish and recharge our brains, build hormones and cell membranes, and promote satiety.

As always, be sure to practice moderation when consuming any type of fats.  Sources of good natural fats include:

  • Avocado
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Coconut and olive oil
  • Lean meats
